Hike Like A Geologist with Joanne Garton

 

Tuesday, May 20th, 5:30PM | Salmon Hole Trailhead Parking area on Riverside Drive, Burlington

Join FFL and Joanne Garton for an informative hike.  Learn more about the underlying geology of the area.   Joanne Garton has a geology degree and worked as a geologist in Quebec and Vermont before transitioning into the UVM Field Naturalist Program for graduate school.  She now works with Vermont Forests, Parks & Recreation in the Urban & Community Forestry Program.

Where: Meet at 5:30PM at the Salmon Hole Trailhead Parking area on Riverside Drive.

Expect to walk 1/2 mile each way on gentle but sandy and uneven terrain. We’ll arrive at the Salmon Hole rock outcrops on the Winooski River by 5:30pm. Programming will finish by 6:30pm, allowing the group to hike back to the parking lot together or separately.

Weather: In case of rain, the hike will continue! In case of severe thunderstorms, the hike will be rescheduled.

Tuesday, June 3 at 5:30PM| Arms Forest, Burlington

Spring bird migration is underway! Warblers, thrushes and more will be flying and singing through our forests. Join us for a tour of Arms Forest with Emily Calder from Audubon Vermont. On this bird walk, see, hear, and learn about these wonderful birds. Emily is an Educator at the Green Mountain Audubon Center and has worked as an environmental educator in the White Mountains.

Directions:  We will meet at the Leddy Park parking lot near the bike path and walk to Arms Forest where we will explore trails through the woods and shrubland. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with some rooty areas and bog bridging and may be muddy. Binoculars will be provided for anyone who needs them.

Weather: In case of light rain, the hike will continue! If it is a heavy rain or severe thunderstorms, the hike will be cancelled. Expect muddy or wet terrain. Please wear waterproof shoes.
