The Main Library & NNE Branch will be closed on Wednesday, January 1 for New Year's Day.

The Fletcher Free Library participates in the Homecard system.

If you are a Burlington resident over 18 years old, you may borrow books and other materials from any Homecard library with an updated FFL card.

Please have your FFL card available for presentation upon check-out at the other participating libraries and remember that you MUST return items to the library from which you borrowed them. The rules of the lending library apply for each transaction. Interlibrary loan requests need to be made through your home library.
  • What is Homecard?
    • The Homecard Library System is a cooperative lending program of 29 libraries in northwestern Vermont. Patrons who sign up for Homecard can check out materials at any Homecard library in Vermont for free.
  • How do I get a Homecard?
    • Bring your FFL card to the Main Library or NNE Branch and ask to sign up for Homecard. Our staff will give you a Homecard sticker for your FFL card, making it useable at other Homecard libraries.
  • Can I return items I check out at another library to FFL?
    • No, items must be returned to the library where they were checked out. If you return an item to the wrong library, your FFL account will reflect the overdue items, which could lead to restrictions being placed on your account.
  • Will my FFL card work at other libraries?
    • Once you have a Homecard sticker, your FFL card will work at Homecard libraries that use the same online catalog system as FFL (Koha). If a Homecard library doesn’t use Koha, you will be issued a special Homecard from that Library free of charge.
  • Will items I check out at another library show up on my FFL Account?
    • If the library uses the Koha system, you will see items checked out from other libraries. If they don’t, you will not.
  • Can I check out Non-Traditional items or use digital resources from another Homecard library?
    • Each library in the system sets their own limits for what Homecard users can access. Usually you will not have access to digital resources, and limited access to new or special collections.
  • How do I see what’s available at other libraries?
    • You can search most Homecard libraries' catalogs on their library websites to see what they have in their collection. You can also visit libraries in person and browse, or call the library.
  • Can I place a hold at another Homecard library?
    • Yes, but not with your online account. You may place a hold on an item at another Homecard library by calling them and asking to place a Homecard hold.
  • Can I renew items from another library online with my FFL account?
    • If the library also uses Koha the item will show up on your FFL account and can be renewed online. If you do not see the item in your online account, contact the library you borrowed that item from for renewals.
  • Will items I check out at another library count toward my item total at FFL?
    • The lending library’s rules apply to each borrowed item. Note that policies like borrowing time and item limits may be different at other libraries.
  • Why do I want a Homecard?
    • You’re reading a series and the next book has a long waiting list at FFL. Check the catalog at another Homecard library, and you might be able to get the book sooner!
    • Your child has a soccer league in Essex every Saturday. You can make a stop at the Essex Free Library part of your weekly routine, returning and checking out materials!
    • You’re on a family camping trip to Grand Isle State Park but you forgot to bring books! Stop by the Grand Isle Free Library on your way up and get reading supplies to keep you entertained by the campfire.
