Food for Talk is a book club for anyone interested in cooking!

This month, our guest chef is Amin Shah . He will demonstrate how to make some of his favorite dishes from his home country of Afghanistan. Stepping in to lead our discussion is Anna Mays, an extraordinary baker and one of the coordinators of Mosaic of Flavor with City Markey and USCRI Vermont.

Shah came to Vermont in 2018 from his home country of Afghanistan. While he was on missions in remote regions as an interpreter for the US military, he loved to spend his free time cooking for his American and Afghan friends. Shah has also been an instructor for the Mosaic of Flavor cooking classes. He is fluent in Pashto, Urdu, Farsi, Punjabi and English. Since moving to Vermont, Shah has started a saffron import business selling pure Afghan saffron from his family's farm in Herat Province. He is excited to share his love of Afghan cuisine with us. Please join us for the demonstration of Afghan dishes by Amin Shah Sahil and the discussion of Parwana by Durkhanai Ayubi with recipes by Farida Ayubi on Sunday, March 13 at 3pm.

Please register with Barbara Shatara at bshatara@burlingtonvt.gov for Zoom meeting information.

More information on how to join this community of home cooks and fellow culinary travelers can be found after the description of this month's cookbook.

About Parwana: Recipes and Stories from an Afghan Kitchen by Durkhanai Ayubi

Interwoven with traditional Afghan recipes is one family’s story of a region long afflicted by war, but with much more at its heart. Author Durkhanai Ayubi’s parents, Zelmai and Farida Ayubi, fled Afghanistan with their young children in 1985, at the height of the Cold War.

When their family-run restaurant Parwana opened its doors in Adelaide in 2009, their vision was to share with the world their family memories through the delights of Afghan cuisine, infused with Afghanistan's rich historical culture and traditions of generosity and hospitality, to offer a more complete picture of the country they had left behind.

Co-sponsored by City Market.
