December: Raising White Kids: Bringing up Children in a Racially Unjust America by Jennifer Harvey

Explore topics such as racism as they are covered in this month's book and relate to parenting. This is an opportunity to create a safe space for discussion, keeping in mind that the facilitators are not experts and are looking to connect and support each other around important parenting issues.

“The Jagged Edge of Progress” with Elise Guyette

Dr. Elise Guyette presents a hard hitting update on the lives of some of the people highlighted in her 2010 book, "Discovering Black Vermont," the story of three generations of free blacks trying to build a life and community in northern Vermont in the years following statehood. She follows them all over the United States, but especially to Reconstruction Era South Carolina, and examines their role in still unresolved social and historical struggles that shape our national discussions to this day.

From the moment they are born, our children are participants in a hugely consequential, ongoing conversation about race and ethnicity of which we, and they, may be only dimly aware. Our news and entertainment media play lead roles in that conversation. According to Common Sense Media, 2-8-year-old children in the US spent an average of nearly three hours every day on screen media alone in 2017.
