In honor of Juneteenth, art teachers Judy Klima from Edmunds Middle School, and Tina Logan from A.D.L. Middle School collaborated on an art assignment for their middle school students. We wanted our students to merge the importance of this holiday with the rich history and beautiy of Ghanaian textiles.

Mazie is ready to celebrate liberty. She is ready to celebrate freedom. She is ready to celebrate a great day in American history. The day her ancestors were no longer slaves. Mazie remembers the struggles and the triumph, as she gets ready to celebrate Juneteenth.

From Caldecott honoree LeUyen Pham, Outside, Inside is a moving picture book celebrating essential workers and the community coming together to face the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Something strange happened on an unremarkable day just before the season changed.

Everybody who was outside . . .

. . . went inside.

Outside, it was quieter, wilder, and different. Inside, we laughed, we cried, and we grew.

We remembered to protect the ones we love and love the ones who protect us.

After discussing the Covid 19 Pandemic and studying the work of contemporary collage artists Patrick Bremer, David Hockney, Benon Lutaaya, and David Gores, Edmunds Middle School  and Essex Middle School students set about creating their own self-portraits using collage as the medium. The patience needed to create these pieces is nothing short of herculean. 7th and 8th grade students deserve a medal for their persistence and commitment to this persnickety art form.
